The PotHeadᵀᴹ
Meet the PotHeadᵀᴹ, a simple device to improve the control of weeds in potted plants.
The PotHeadᵀᴹ is a lightweight, flexible, tough device made from recycled UV-resistant polypropylene (the same material as is used to make standard pots) with an expected life of more than 4 years in the Australian sun. At the end of their usable life they are simply melted down for re-use.
Features:
The units have a shallow cone shape which smoothly funnels water to the air vents and centre hole. This then permeates back throughout the media by water tension. A considerable percentage of evaporating water is also recaptured and returned to the plant, reducing overall watering requirements.
The two halves overlap with air vents to allow the growing media to breathe. They fit snugly to the pot rim and if applied firmly can resist winds of over 50km/h.
Potheads moderate temperature by blocking sun to the soil surface with warm air below radiating out through the air vents, reducing the heat of the growing media. In winter frosts the Potheadsᵀᴹ insulate the soil and reduce freezing.
Herbicides are not typically required. If you are nevertheless a fan of pre-emergent herbicides, only 7% of the normal dose is required per pot with a Potheadᵀᴹ applied.
The comparable alternatives currently available commercially do not work very well alone, with integrated weed management the only truly effective method - involving disciplined nursery hygiene, regular manual labour weeding pots and extensive use of pre and post emergent herbicide.
Like pots used in production, PotHeadsᵀᴹ can be sterilised by autoclave or bleach dip, re-used and rotated through a nursery over and over again.
